While working on a story I've been tangling with, I continued to become frustrated by each writing environment that I used. I had started with Word as most do, found it unsettling and bloated, and abandoned it quickly. I'd written too many term papers in Word to ever be able to detach from reality and write fiction. Next were a series of apps- so many I have forgotten most of them- but I can pretty much guaranteed that I gave any 'focused' writing app on the iPad a good college try. Most were unsatisfying in a tactile way. There was nothing about the UIs to grip onto, they all faded away seamlessly into the pad. Too invisible. The pendulum had swung too far in the other direction. Somewhat aspirationally I recalled George RR Martin talking about writing his novels in an old DOS word processor. That seemed like a very hip and cool and immersive thing to do, so I tried out a few and eventually settled into WorldStar and it was fucking AWESOME. Big chunky fonts and a bare terminal feel, writing almost felt like hacking. But the file formats were inconvenient with little compatability and I had to use the processor from within a DOS shell, which just added additional layers of friction. After growing frustrated with the lack of sync available without a lot of fiddling, I went back to the drawing board and found Scrivener. Scrivener is fantastic and I love Scrivener and if you love writing you should check it out, it's a great writing environment and gets A LOT right. But there were still itches I couldn't scratch. So here we are! A word processor built just how I wanted it, with features that are meaningful to me. Maybe they'll be meaningful to you! I have a lot more planned for the app and I plan to not only continue development on it, but also begin using it as my primary word processor for my ongoing storywriting.
